Die Hard... Lives UP!

My American accent is supposed to sound weird.

Yippee-Ki-Yay mother father (for those of us who grew up watching Die Hard with the curse words removed)... this movie lives up to our memories of it being an awesome way to spend Christmas vacation.

There's a cultural debate over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, but Jess and I took this a step further and argued that Die Hard could be a Hallmark Christmas movie. Behold!

THE HALLMARK CHRISTMAS MOVIE FORMULA

1. Workaholic Character who doesn't have time for love or Christmas - if we make Holly Gennaro McClane the protagonist, she is clearly a Hallmark heroine. Will she find the value of family and love this Christmas eve? Yes. Through the Christmas miracle of watching 2 of her colleagues get murdered, she transforms from a career-centered woman to a family-first wife and mother. Plus, she gets to  festively punch that reporter.

2. The Love Interest who pushes all her buttons - John McClane swoops just in time for Christmas. They bicker and banter. Can he break through her icy exterior and help her rediscover her Christmas spirit? Yes, but she's going to have to give up her Rolex.

3. Holiday decorations everywhere - Nakatomi Plaza is decorated for the company Christmas party, and arguably the characters in this movie keep decorating through out the film. Let's just say there's a lot of red in this movie. There's the shimmer of broken glass- like a Dance of the Snow Flakes. There's a body in the elevator festively calling out Ho Ho Ho to the captive masses. And so many movies end with fireworks - this movie ends with C-4 (but close enough).

4. Happy ending - in the end, the family is reunited and Christmas is saved. What could be more Hallmark than that?

Of course, Die Hard could spin off into many other movie genres. We also want to see the Ocean 11's style heist movie that Hans Gruber is living in.
