$7 for 2 beers and 2 hotdogs? We really are dreaming. |
The boys of summer are back... sort of... they're ghosts. But they can still hit a dinger! We reviewed Field of Dreams and determined that it Lives Up. This movie is still a classic.
Jess and Amanda had a contentious discussion about what happens when Terrence Mann disappears into the cornfield with the ghosts.
He gets transformed into the ghost of a lion king? |
Jess thinks that he gets a day pass to hang out in the afterlife with the ball players (who may or may not be heading to the Beetlejuice waiting room... we think there's a potential crossover here).
Amanda thinks that this means he dies. Jess is NOT happy with this interpretation.
We casually surveyed listeners and friends, and it turns out many people think the cornfield means something in between - Terrence is going with the ghosts to the afterlife, but he'll still be able to visit the cornfield baseball park and hang out with Ray.
We were hoping the script might clarify this, but here's how it appears:
It turns out that there's a 4th theory. Terrence Mann was a ghost the whole time.
James Earl Jones seems to support this theory in this interview clip. Is Terrence interacting with other ghosts when he interviews townspeople about Doc Graham? Is that why he appears so suddenly in front of Ray's VW bus? Is that why they see a newspaper article saying his son thinks he's dead?
That would mean Ray has a 6th sense ability to see dead people, and is driving ghosts all around the country (sort of a reverse Large Marge transportation situation).
Whatever happened to Terrence Mann, his redemption brings a lot of soul to this film. People will come. People will most definitely come.
