Troop Beverly Hills... does NOT live up

Raise your hand if you shouldn't have left Cheers.

Once upon a time, Hollywood released a film about a doe-eyed, fashion-obsessed, rich white lady from California. A failed relationship jolts her into reconsidering her life. Even though she's unprepared, she throws herself into a challenge that nobody thinks she can handle, and yet! With her newly found grit and her kindness towards others, she converts a rival into a friend and proves that she has what it takes. The whole world underestimated her! She succeeds beyond anyone's wildest expectations, and becomes a role model for little girls everywhere!

That movie is called Legally Blond

You should go watch that instead of  Troop Beverly Hills

Troop Beverly Hills was the darling of weekend afternoon cable reruns in the 1990s. My co-host Jessica Latterman really likes this movie, and thus we've reached our first ever Siskel & Ebert style disagreement.

This film gets a big thumbs down from me. It follows a soon-to-be divorcee, Phyllis, and her troop of Wilderness Girls** on a romp around Rodeo Drive, to the Beverly Hills Hotel, to the country club, to Phyllis's divorce hearing, yadda-yadda-yadda, and eventually into the woods for a hot minute.

I could do a deep analysis of what this film seems to be saying about prejudices of class and race...

...Or share my thoughts on its depiction of women competing against other women rather than working together...

...But honestly? I don't think the filmmakers bothered to consider any of these things... so why should we waste our brain cells on that?

Instead, here's everything I actually want to say about this movie:

  • It's kinda annoying.
  • It has no stakes.
  • It's just not that funny.
  • The shear enormity of Craig T. Nelson's pants may be the only reason to watch this.

That said, sometimes not-so-great movies make for great podcast topics. Listen to all of our thoughts on Troop Beverly Hills (on the podcast service of your choice!) at Live UP podcast.

**note! This movie is NOT affiliated with the Girls Scouts of America... they never would have signed off on this nonsense.
