Pee-Wee's Big Adventure... does NOT live up.

Pee-wee reacts to Jessica's review of Pee-wee's Big Adventure

Siskel and Ebert split very hard when it came to Pee-wee's Big Adventure; the latter called it a Guilty Pleasure and the former declared it one of the worst films of 1985.

The LiveUP Pod also found this movie polarizing; Amanda laughed all the way through it while Jess got increasingly annoyed. To be fair, our viewing experiences might have influenced our reviews: Amanda had a glass of wine in hand, and Jess was huddled up in a blanket with a fever. Ultimately, we agreed to disagree.

We did find consensus in the following areas:

1. We don't want Pee-wee living near us.

Pee-wee's man-child shtick is fine when contained in the safety this movie (or his TV show), but in the real world, we would be alarmed. He is a 33 year old man hanging out with the neighborhood kids. His house and yard are full of toys... it might as well be a witch's gingerbread cottage. Call us old and jaded, but we've seen man-acts-like-kid thing go wrong too many times.

2. 30 seconds of Large Marge terrified us for the rest of our childhoods

Just the sound of Large Marge's truck pulling over is enough to send chills through us... but it turns out this scene is remarkably short and kinda silly looking. We also agreed that Large Marge would make a hell of an Uber driver. Five stars.

3. We also want to watch the sun rise from inside a dinosaur.
In a rare moment of seriousness, Pee-wee and Simone have a conversation about their goals while sitting inside the mouth of a life-size dinosaur sculpture. There's a whole double entendre thing going on in this scene, but the real beauty of this moment is that the world is full of these wonderful weird places and people. Go, explore! Follow your dreams! Don't let your big "but" get in the way.

4. Dream sequences suck, and so do clowns.
Seriously. Who dreams about clowns this much?
