Surely you're joking. |
1980's Airplane! is a string of Dad Jokes that has led to some of our all time favorite work memes ("Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!). We had a split decision on whether this lives up to our memories of it or not.
For Amanda, this viewing of Airplane! felt like an epic new level of genius after she discovered that this isn't an original film. It's a remake of a overly serious disaster movie called "Zero Hour!"
The Zucker, Abraham, and Zucker team bought the rights to script for Zero Hour! to avoid copyright infringement. They lifted entire scenes from the movie and shot them word-for-word... then took each scene off a nonsensical cliff. For example, the below scene from Zero Hour! will feel familiar:

"It's a big building with patients. But that's not important right now." |
Some internet hero edited both movies together this excellent "Side-by-side" comparison: Zero Hour! (1957) Vs Airplane! (1980) Excellent work! No notes.
It takes talent to write a comedy screenplay. BUT! It's an entirely different skill to recognize the humor in a movie that takes itself so seriously that it's unintentionally funny. That's what Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker did by making Airplane!
Unrelated thought, but since we mentioned in the episode that we would post it, here is a link to the 1970s Yuban coffee commercial that Airplane parodies. They unintentionally hired the same actress from the original commercial. She's spot on at parodying herself. "Jim never vomits at home."
