Aladdin... Lives UP!

This carpet goes 3000 miles per hour

We reviewed Disney's 1992 animated version of Aladdin, and despite Disney's warning that this film is not culturally sensitive at all, we still think this movie lives up.

It's the final pairing of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken for the lyrics and music - they revolutionized Disney movies from the mediocre offerings of the 1980's (The Fox & The Hound... The Black Cauldron... The Great Mouse Detective... blah) into must-see opening weekend events. This movie won Ashman his final posthumous Oscar for "Friend Like Me".

Release the Robin Williams!

The other thing that makes this movie incredible is the Robin Williams performance as genie. Disney gave him a script and then let him go ballistic -- it's peak Robin Williams, right up there with Good Morning Vietnam.

They've released a Robin Williams outtakes video of some of the random things he said that wound up on the cutting room floor. It's definitely worth a watch, if only to hear Robin Williams doing new material. Man, we miss that guy.

Robin Williams, Howard Ashman, and Aladdin... you all live up!
